Still my favorite small/portable gaming notebook. Nothing can really compare with it in terms of temps and noise levels. I really want them to release the newer version of this I don't get why they haven't :P
PC Specs:
i5 3230M
GTX 660M
8GB RAM @ 1600Mhz
750GB HDD @ 7200RPM
1600x900 Display
Intro Song: GRiZ - The Future Is Now: • Video
You've done your research man. Almost a year after your video and this still remains to be a fantastic 14" gaming laptop. I've owned my G46 for over two years. It was only until recently that I decided to do a plethora of upgrades to it after not seeing any announcements of a successor. It's the cooling that makes this thing a gem. If a successor ever is announced, then I'll buy it. Simple as that. Here are the upgrades I committed to with high frames and power efficiency in mind.
- Intel Core i7 3632QM
(Most power efficient Ivy Bridge mobile processor on the market.)
- Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300
(Wasn't fond of the 2230 it came with.)
- Glossy HD (1366x768) LED Backlight
(My eyes have always preferred deeper blacks. Decided to keep 1366x768 to maintain high framerate in games.)
- Samsung 850 Pro SSD 256GB
(Uses only 2 watts of energy and I had wanted to replace that 5400rpm...)
- Crucial 16GB DDR3 1600mhz
(Reliable memory and low voltage at that.)
I dont get it did you upgrade from i7 to intel n 6300
I loved this 14inch gaming laptop so much I upgraded instead of buying a new gaming laptop. This laptop will never over heat EVER and has amazing battery life. Best laptop I've ever owned. Only negative is windows 8 OOTB but easily replaced with Win 7 64bit.
I dropped in a Intel i7-3920XM CPU (3.14GHz), ARCTIC MX-4 thermal compound for the CPU & GPU, 16.0gig (1866MHz) of Kingston Hyper-X RAM, Bootable Samsung 256gb Msata (SSD), and the old 750GB (HDD) (7200RPm) wiped and reused for slave storage.
There is a Full HD 1920x1080 display upgrade available but i'm really waiting for the new Gen G46 GPU releases to upgrade any further.
I7-3930xm?! Seems legit :)
+Austin Wright hi Austin
I have this laptopand saw on your coment that you have upgarde to the i7-3920xm... my question is two years later did you had any problems? is it fully compatible? do you recomend doing it? (I still have the i7-3630qm)
Not a single problem +Fábio Gonçalves. It's well worth doing, well worth the cost and if you can find a i7-3940XM grab it. It's been 4 years, the only thing I have to say negatively about the G46vw now is the dated 660m GPU, it bottle necks the system but with that said it can run 80% of games at ultra and some on custom ultra plus settings. To get the most out of the G46vw you'll what to grab a Msata SSD and configure it as your boot OS drive (Win7 preferably) and with some tweaks to OS it'll boot in between 4-8sec like mine.
Thanks Austin, Already have a 500GB samsung evo850 ssd as my booting device... I was planning to buy a new laptop but I just love this one so much that I don't want to leave it... So maybe upgrading my cpu and saving some money could be a solution... thansk a lot and have fun with your G$& ;)
G46*
I have your exact laptop. You still have yours?
does it play dota2?
I love this laptop, I overcloacked the video card and it works great. It is true, the Alienware 14 has overheating problems, even with my video card overcloacked it never goes over 80 degrees. I play most games in high settings. It is funny that listening to you speak about this laptop is like listening to myself when I talk about this laptop. Great review!
I'm also awaiting patiently for a newer version of this laptop. I've upgraded to the i7 3630QM, Corsair vengeance 8GB, Samsung 840 512GB SSD, Killer 1103 wireless, and the 1600x900 matte screen. Runs all the games i play (RTS/MOBA) like a champ.. Best laptop since my M11x v1.
I have the g750 (gtx 780m) its a great gaming laptop and the cooling is just AMAZING.
still using this pc in 2019, its been obsolete for like 5 years
2nd gaming laptop I have ever bought. My first was an OLD g70gx. I mistreated that (very regrettably sadly) and picked up this one used for 200 bucks about 3 months ago. Im gonna baby the daylights out of it physically to keep it as loooooong as possible.
My 2nd gaming laptop i ever got, and its still one of my favorites. I wish it never broke..
Still got mine. I'd hate to see it go.
@@leerman22 can it run dota2
I've had this for a year, the cooling is really the only perk, though the build quality is quite good. Not a lot of bells and whistles. The 660m is powerful enough for most games on High. It even does newer games, AC Black Flag on High with playable great looking graphics. Though not out of this world framerates. Same goes for Tomb Raider and Battlefield 4. I have a gaming desktop with a noticeable performance jump, same card. While the cooling is innovative, it still won't help your card from burning up if you play for hours and hours. So I recommend about an hour, then take a break. Or go for a console (next gen). These are an acquired taste, also on battery you can't game at all (and it's built in). Framerates drop horribly. So it's decent, nothing spectacular.
Would you still recommend this if I could pick one up for like 650?
DAT COOLING
I have this exact same laptop and I agree with you 100%! The next laptop I buy will be the i7 version of this exact same Asus Rog and I'll just upgrade the video card hard drives and ram. Then again I my just upgrade the one I have. Damn this laptop is awesome!
You can just upgrade the CPU on this model. As long as it's a third gen processor. I7 3840qm? But the GPU is soldered onto the motherboard from what I understand so no upgrading in that department.
does anyone know how to clean the fans of this laptop without dismanteling it?
I really want them to release a new version now... it's been a long time.
u mentioned that u can get the i7 version for about $900. where?
I couldn't stand my g75vw... It was a monster a few years ago but since I got my new DESKTOP, I honestly couldn't go back to my laptop.
I was looking for a good gaming laptop for me, around 1000 to 1200$, and I'm really liking this Asus.
It could easily run most games I wish to play (the most performance-heavy game in my to-play list would probably be Skyrim on High Settings, and in the future possibly ARMA 3 or Watch Dogs), but from some reviews I've read, it seems to have quite some trouble with mundane tasks such as word processing and other stuff.
I mostly plan to play connected to the charger, so battery power is not a big deal at all, and I don't really care much for it (from what I've read) having "dead" colors. I don't know, I'm not a computer expert, so I'm using some layman terms. I would still use it quite a bit for "office" work, such writing documents and making presentations, but not much else, so I don't know if that would be that much of a problem for me.
My current laptop is a Sony Vaio with the following details:
i3-2310M
GT 410M
4.1 GB (Memory)
1366 x 768
Should I buy the Asus, try and upgrade mine or look for another option?
This Asus is a fantastic laptop for many reasons, but it is getting out of date these days. I would look at the Aorus X3+ (with 13.9" display). Its the closest thing to an Asus and the cooling seems to be good.
Another option would be the Lenovo Y50, that one is now confirmed to be quite good actually, quiet fan noise and low temperatures, much like this Asus. And it sports an 860M maxwell so its actually a really good deal.
I can't really find much on the Aorus X3+, but the Lenovo seems pretty good.
Problem is I can't really go higher than this Asus's price. My second biggest problem is that I should be going to university in a year or two, and as I mentioned before, I read that this Asus is very bad at handling «general office work», in this review at Notebook Check: www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G46VW-Notebook.86486.0.html
I don't know how "bad" they mean it to be, so I'm not sure if it's something that should influence my decision, but it is pretty much the only thing standing between buying it or not. Since you have first-hand experience, could you give me your opinion on this? I would probably use it mostly for Word/PDF documents, PowerPoint presentations and possibly some coding programs (assuming this is what they mean by «general office work»).
Dieza4 Well firstly, you should not have to be paying $1000-$1200 for this laptop, it is a 2 generation old notebook. I got mine 8 months ago for $800.
The Aorus X3 was just announced so there won't be much news about it. The Lenovo Y50 is $1100 roughly.
The Asus would be fine doing office work in terms of performance, the 1600x900 screen hinders it a little bit but it is not even close to unusable. It would be totally fine with office work but any laptop would be.
I personally would look more into the Y50, much faster performance for gaming (more than 50% faster) and it is using all the latest graphics and stuff where-as the Asus is quite out of date, also has 1080p screen VS the 900p screen on the Asus.
Well, I'm from Portugal, Europe, my bad. Here it still costs about 1200 "euros" (not dollars), which should be around 1600$. I've looked up the Lenovo Y50 (Non-Touch Screen), and it cost around 1400$ to 1700$. Maybe it was outdated, but I think it's unlikely, since it was the official Lenovo website. If I could find it actually costing 1100$, it would be around 812 euros (a great price actually, I'd already have enough Money to buy it).
I think if the Asus can still be used for what I need, regarding the "office work", I wouldn't need much else. I don't really need Last-Gen stuff, but the Lenovo sounds really worth it from what you're saying! The more performance/FPS the merrier. I'll look up more on it, thanks.
It looks cool. But what is the temperatures like in e.g BF4 or something like that?
I have this laptop. Lately it cant connect to wifi. everytime I troubleshoot it tells me that the hardware radio switch is off. can you please help me to try and find it ?
Ariel Ortiz Check the drivers. I had the same issue and the driver was the cause. Make sure its the 15.10.3.2 driver. I had to get it off the HP site. h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=wk_124057_1
Hope that helps!
It work!!! Thank you so much! Best of wishes.
Glad to be of help! Enjoy this great laptop now :)
where can i find my self one of these???
Exactly. Why haven't they?
What is that intro song?
Any news on the newer model? I have 17in ROG and I would like to switch to this but preferably a new edition OR similar 15in model with weight under 6 pounds. Asus ROG laptops have awesome cooling XD
Asus GX500. I don't know my thoughts on it yet... but its there.
outro song guys?!!!
Where did you get the 1600x900 display?
What's the mouse?
Razer Mamba 2012
Hi Mike,
I am deciding between the Asus G46VW or the Clevo W230ST.
Your help is appreciated.
Will there be an update for the Asus?
Thanks Mike
*****

Hey Mike, would this run some hardcore games like battlefield Hardline and Star Citizen?
Should i get the g56 or the g550
I have a HP Envy 15. It has 2gb of dedicated graphics (radeon) and six beats speakers. 8 gig of ram. Not sure if this was a good buy... $700 new
im new wat one would u recommend me plz respond
waiting for an updated version with a haswell chip with a gtx 765m and a 900p screen
Hi thanks for the video. I'm A LOT into 14 inch laptops I had the m14x r1 from it very first release (which was then the only option in terms of 14"gaming laptop) I am going to upgrade now. And wanted to say this
The r1 of alienware m14x r1 is quite bad in terms cooling indeed. But the new alienware 14 has completely solved that problem. Even overclocking the gpu isn't a problem. I'm going for the new to be released alienware 14 that will release very soon now. With the geforce 800 series. Which comes to the only thing I hate about asus. It is VERY late in offering the latest hardware especially in my country in europe. So yeah asus ain;t going to cut it for me this time. Thanks for the review though
i have this laptop, its great for what it is, i could run most any game, but has problems trying to run games that require very high performance
feel bad for the rubber studs on the bottom
Would you consider this laptop to still be viable? I'm comparing this to the y510p, but many reviews have said that the y510p sli gpu can reach 97 degrees celsius, so what do you think?
The y510p gets way too hot for my liking and is also decently loud. If you're looking for a quiet gaming laptop, this one (G46) is still alright, a bit weak power wise to today's standards. If you're looking for something more modern but still powerful/quiet(ish)/good temperatures. The Asus G550JK and Lenovo Y50 are two good options.
Alright, thanks!
@@MikeTheVike is it possible to modify the backlit of the asus g46 laptop like the asus g73 laptop? by this i mean is it possible to put color sheets inside the keyboard so the light can lit that color up as the backlit, if confused then look up asus g73 backlit modifications on youtube and some will show up
Where in the world can I find one? :/
Ill sell you mine. i just got a new gaming comp dont need this.
FamilyTimer Cool. PM me :)
this one has i5 graphics and not even 1080p... while mine has i7 1920x1080 and 120hz 16gb ram,SSD and doesnt even make any sound
Name? I am yet to find a silent/quiet gaming laptop that still keeps temps down - other than the Asus ones.
***** Samsung Series 7 Gamers. You can play the most intensive game you can find and even dont hear 1 sound. I have the AMD HD7870M which kinda sucks but i really like it anyway
***** Nice! I like the looks of the keyboard a lot, kinda like a desktop keyboard. Noise level is quite good - really quiet (close to the Asus laptops so I'm impressed) but the temps were a good bit higher if we're directly comparing..
However it is a 17" so its a kahuna and... the build quality looks kinda... plastic-y (simply observation though). So still for me if I had to choose between Asus G750J (780M, i7, 1080p... better specs) I'd still go with Asus.
One can't really directly compare the 17" gaming laptops to the >15" as they can't fit so much in em' specs wise. Also for a smaller laptop I do prefer 1600x900 as 1080p is almost "too" much. Also this laptop does come in an i7 variant.
***** Well yeh its kinda plastic but im fine w it. If i had a desktop i wouldnt mind having 1600x900 since my old laptop had that reso but this is my main computer so i prefer 1080p as my native reso =]
***** Yep totally. For anything bigger than 14" I'd go with 1080p.
WHERE CAN I BUY THIS I WANT IT!!!
